"For almost fifty years Mr Kipling has been inspired by the world around him to produce exceedingly good cakes - there's something for everyone. So it's no wonder Mr Kipling cakes have been No. 1 since 1976 and are bought by more than 60% households each year. He really is a good egg - and that's why in 2011 he made the switch to baking with only free-range eggs. He uses more than 60 million eggs every single year - that's a lot of happy hens! What's more the range contains 100% natural flavours, no artificial colours and no hydrogenated fats.
We were 'egg-static' when we heard that Compassion in World Farming wanted to give Mr Kipling a 'Good Egg Award', praise indeed for Mr Kipling's egg-ceedingly good cakes."
Senior Brand Manager - Mr Kipling
Update 26 January 2016: In April 2015, Mr Kipling advised us that they had changed their sourcing policy from free-range to barn eggs.
For companies to be awarded with our Good Egg Award, they must commit to using only cage-free eggs (from barn, free-range or organic systems).
Whilst Compassion prefers hens to have free range access, the Good Egg Award criteria addresses the primary welfare issue of getting hens out of cages. The Award that we present is the same whichever cage-free system the company sources from. Mr Kipling continues to source from cage-free systems, and as such continues to be the winner of a Good Egg Award.
At the time of receiving the Good Egg Award from Compassion in 2011, Mr Kipling communicated widely on their policy to source only free-range eggs. In the interests of accuracy, the above quote was initially edited to reflect this sourcing change. However, to avoid confusion, the quote has been returned to the original wording and this update added, 26 January 2016.
